17th Street Clubhouse
The Boys & Girls Club Movement engages youth in activities that are fun and enjoyable while supporting development of the capacities described below. This is accomplished through Club programs and in discussions between staff and Club members. Clubs cannot achieve this without caring, capable staff that forge relationships with young people and influence their ability to succeed in life.
Clubhouse hours are:

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday - 3pm to 7pm
Tuesday - 2pm to 7pm

CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Empowers youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and other's cultural identities.
Torch Club: Freedom, justice and tolerance are the principles inherent in the Torch Club program and the basic ingredients of citizenship in a democracy. The critical role of the Torch Club Advisor is to mentor and empower each Torch Club member to develop a sense of responsibility and appreciation for citizenship and leadership.
Keystone Club: The "Big Brother" of the Torch Club, this program focuses youth (ages 14-18) in being true leaders in the community and Club environment. Youth will serve as a mentor for Torch Club and will lead the Club into a successful community partnership.
Youth for Unity: Youth for Unity provides youth and parents with the groundwork that will help them better understand diversity and combat prejudice, bigotry and discrimination.

HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS
Develops young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their well-being, help them to set personal goals, and develop the competencies to live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Street SMART- This program is designed to counteract the negative lure of gangs, violence, and “street” influences for young adolescents. Teens take part in a nine-week program that is designed to help members develop a greater awareness of conflict and its resolution. SMART Girls- This program focuses on helping girls, ages 10-15, to develop healthy attitudes and lifestyles. As part of accomplishing these goals, the program addresses health and social issues that are specific to young women. By offering young women skills in nutrition, developing healthy habits, communication, and appreciation of themselves, this program will help youth development. Passport to Manhood - is a program that focuses on promoting positive values and responsible behavior for boys ages 11-14. The program addresses peer pressure, sexual relations and developing caring and responsible relationships. Triple Play - Triple Play’s nutrition component, called Healthy Habits, covers the power of choice, calories, vitamins and minerals, the food pyramid and appropriate portion size. Healthy Habits is the “Mind” component of Triple Play, which emphasizes eating smart and maintaining physical fitness to improve the overall well-being of Club members. |
EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations, and embrace technology to optimize employability. Power Hour - members participate in Power Hour daily. They receive one-on-one tutoring homework help from staff and our “Gear Up” volunteers from local colleges, and have opportunities to learn while playing. This occurs through educational board games, USA Experience Today current event activities using the newspaper, Power Hour pages, and hangman, Scrabble, Brainteaser and Trivial Pursuit. Goals for Graduation – is designed to work with members to help them to set and attain their current and future academic goals. Club staff, teachers, and parents work to support each member and help them to establish a manageable plan for achieving their goals up to and through high school graduation and higher education. Job Ready! - is a program for teens, ages 14 — 18 that provides members with the skills and knowledge necessary to enter and compete in today’s workforce. Through 120 competency-based sessions organized into 11 program units, the program is designed to build the necessary skills teens need to find, obtain, keep, and excel in a job. |
FINE ARTS
Enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of visual and tactile arts and crafts, performing arts, and creative writing. Fine Arts Exhibit Program - This year-round program encourages artistic expression among Club members ages 6-18 through drawing, painting, print making, sculpture and collage. Works of art are displayed at local and regional exhibits. Winning artwork is sent for inclusion in the National Fine Arts Exhibit at the BGCA’s National Conference. |
SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION
Develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment, social and interpersonal skills. Inner-Club Sports/ Activities: Depending on the season, you can expect to see our nine different locations going head-to-head to see who the best in Niagara Falls is. Inner-Club sports include: Cheerleading, Gymnastics, baseball, hockey, volleyball, flag football, basketball and softball. We also create a diverse atmosphere by attending field trips, picnics and other activities. Various Recreational Activities: attending a Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Niagara University or a NCCC game. Picnics, visits to local parks, roller skating, ice skating, local historical sites, trips to amusement parks and visits to local performing art shows. |
