716 United Basketball Program

The 716 United Basketball program by Sanquin Starks, a Niagara Falls native who saw the potential of using the game of basketball as a means to build healthy lifestyles, character and leadership skills in kids and teens today. Through the game he was able to build a mentoring relationship with kids that allowed him to talk about school, nutrition, careers, and a wide range of topics. The kids would talk to him about all sorts of topics while shooting free throws and he was able to help with different issues or problems they were facing.  Through these discussions he learned the kids needed so much more than just to run on the court and there was a large number of kids that needed and wanted to be part of this program.  ​
​ In 2022, The Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club met with Sanquin and together, we developed his successful grassroots program into an official program of the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club. The coaches ability to teach and develop skills on the court, while focusing on health and life skills along with career and development skills through the Boys & Girls Clubs programming has, enabled us to grow 716 United from a few teams to a City wide basketball program that focuses on the whole child – not just the sport.  
The Coaches and NFBGC Youth Development Staff work together to wrap services around all the kids and keep them engaged in positive programs and activities that help foster skills necessary to succeed both in sport and life.  Coaches and Staff meet weekly with school personnel to get progress reports on grades and behaviors so we can recognize good work or help participants get back on track.  Because of the support and team building created, parents and families get involved as well.  Many attend every game and cheer.  There are family picnics and activities throughout the year as well.
